Failure Investigations

Failure Investigations
Failure of a design can take many forms, including:
  • Premature fatigue failure
  • Inability to withstand extreme in-service loads
  • Unacceptable effects on surroundings (e.g. vibrations, noise, leaks)
  • Required level of performance is not achieved

As a result of its finite element analysis (FEA) and testing expertise, Eatec provides an efficient approach to the investigation of in-service failures, and the identification of the cause of the problem and the changes required to ensure the design performs satisfactorily.

In some cases the cause of the problem can be identified by instrumenting the structure using accelerometers or strain gauges, and taking measurements whilst it is operating. Using finite element analysis (FEA), potential design modifications can then be evaluated to identify the most beneficial.

In other cases, finite element analysis (FEA) is used to identify the cause of the failure or problem, and to assess the effects of potential design changes.

Examples of the types of failures investigated by Eatec include:

  • Excessive vibration of process plants
  • Fatigue failure of vibrating screens used at quarries
  • Failure of ship berthing fenders
  • Excessive noise and vibration levels in ships
  • Leaking of gaskets
  • Failure of bearings

Eatec has undertaken failure investigations for clients in many industries, including:

  • Processing
  • Marine
  • Material handling
  • Power generation
  • Railway
  • Quarrying
  • Automotive

Normally, once the cause of the failure or problem has been identified, Eatec works with the client to identify the design changes required to resolve the issue. However, in some cases, Eatec’s findings are used to support a claim against a supplier or third party.

Eatec has over 30 years experience of providing finite element analysis (FEA) and testing consultancy services to a wide range of national and international clients in industries which include oil & gas, power, marine, processing, defence, transport and industrial.
