Vibration Analysis
When a structure is to be subjected to dynamic loads, its vibration response can be critical with respect to its ability to perform adequately and to meet the specification.

Using finite element analysis (FEA), the dynamic characteristics of a design can be identified, and the response to vibration inputs determined.

All structures possess natural frequencies, and if subjected to vibration inputs at or close to one of these frequencies, could experience high levels of response. This could lead to excessive deflections, velocities or accelerations, and potentially premature fatigue failures.

In many dynamic finite element analyses, the initial phase of work involves calculating the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes for the structure. These frequencies can then be assessed against the frequencies of any known vibration inputs.

In addition to calculating the natural frequencies and mode shapes, a vibration analysis can be performed to determine the response of the structure to dynamic inputs. The analyses which are commonly performed are:

  • Harmonic response
  • Random vibration analysis
  • Seismic analysis
  • Transient response

In some projects, the vibration analysis identifies that the proposed design does not provide the required performance. In these instances, Eatec works with the client to optimise the design in order that it complies with the requirements.
