Overview – Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is now used extensively to predict how components and assemblies will behave under a wide range of conditions.

Commonly, Finite Element Modelling is used to provide an understanding of how a structure will perform, with particular regard to: Swaging

  • Stresses and deflections
  • Fatigue life
  • Natural frequencies and mode shapes
  • Vibration response
  • Shock / Impact behaviour
  • Temperature distributions and distortions
  • Heat transfer

The use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) minimises the need to make assumptions about how a structure will respond to applied loads, and hence allows accurate results to be obtained.

The FEA projects we undertake are performed using the Abaqus FEA software suite. When required, the software allows non-linearities due to materials (e.g. elastic-plastic behaviour), contact between components and geometry changes to be included in the analyses, and thereby more representative results are obtained.
